Going Barefoot

Sep 11, 2005 · by John · In: Footcare, Health Tagged: bare feet, bare foot, barefeet, barefoot, barefoot children, going bare foot, going barefoot

I just returned from a conference in San Antonio and have to share a few thoughts on bare feet. Being a people watcher and a foot watcher, I couldn’t help but notice how frequently people go barefoot. Now, mind you, I have no objection to being barefoot. In fact I’m barefoot as I write this post. However many people are taking this a bit farther than I’d choose to do.     I noticed several people walking barefoot through the hotel lobby. This was a large upscale hotel in downtown …

Time on Your Feet = Happy Feet

Sep 8, 2005 · by John · In: Footcare, Footwear, Health, Sports Tagged: conditioning, Foot Care, foot pain, Footcare

Over the years, I have seen many people, especially athletes, complete marathons and ultramarathons. Complaints range from, “My foot feels like one big blister.” to “I can’t even walk.”     These athletes usually have one thing in common. They have stressed their feet beyond what their feet are …

He concluded that this condition impacted their gait, causing your foot to hyperpronate—a dysfunction of the foot causing your ankles to roll in when you stand, walk and run.      Estimates range from 15% of the population to as high as …

Saving Your Toes With the Right Toebox

Sep 4, 2005 · by John · In: Footcare, Footwear, Health, Sports Tagged: black toenails, fitting shoes, Morton’s toe, Mortons foot, shoe fit, toebox, toenails

When trying on shoes, the toebox is one of the most important parts of your shoe. Those little (or large) toes at the end of your feet need room. The toebox is the front part of the shoe that covers the toes. That means we are talking about both height and width. The right toebox can save your toes. The wrong toebox can cost you your toenails.     In shoes with the right toe box, your toes will feel comfortable and have room to wiggle and breath. Shoes with the wrong toebox will …

Two weeks ago at the Outdoor Retailers Show I met Ryan Jordan of BackpackingLight and picked up a copy of the new book he edited, Lightweight Backpacking & Camping: A Field Guide to Wilderness Hiking Equipment, Technique, and Style. Ryan and his team are the gurus of lightening your load. Their website BackpackingLight.com has a wealth of information, gear reviews, and tips on this fast growing sport.
